What a fractional CTO costs in 2026 (and what the price is actually buying)

Market ranges, my own number, and the three things that should move the price: scope, cadence, and ownership.

What a fractional CTO costs in 2026 (and what the price is actually buying)

Fractional CTO pricing is confusing on purpose. Most pages say "contact us." So here is a page that does not.

The market range

Across the offers I see, fractional CTO retainers run from roughly $3,000 a month for a few advisory hours to $20,000 or more for a near-half-time seat at a funded startup. Day rates for the same people land between $1,500 and $4,000. The spread is not about talent. It is about what the money buys, and most listings do not say.

The three things that move the price

Scope. "Own the technology direction for one initiative" and "be our CTO" are different jobs. The first is priceable. The second is a salary with the benefits removed.

Cadence. A weekly executive session with async support between sessions costs more than one monthly call, because the person has to hold your context all week.

Ownership. This is the one that matters. Are you buying a block of hours, or is the person accountable for adoption and a measured result? Hours are cheap. Ownership is what makes the initiative land.

My number

$9,500 per month, three-month initial commitment, one seat at a time. That buys one 90-minute executive operating session each week, asynchronous decision support throughout the business week, a 90-day technology and AI outcome plan, a profit baseline for one operating loop, and a monthly executive brief. It does not buy a help desk, an outsourced engineering team, or same-hour response, and the offer page says so.

The fee reserves ownership and momentum around one outcome. It is not a rate card.

When the cheaper option is right

If you already have a technical lead and you need judgment rather than ownership, do not buy the seat. A Technical Advisor arrangement, $3,500 to $5,500 a month depending on cadence for founder-led teams and scoped per engagement for larger organizations, gives you the same person's opinion without the accountability you do not need yet.

How to compare two offers

  • Ask what one initiative they would own in the first 90 days, and how they would measure it.
  • Ask what your team is expected to do. If the answer is "nothing," the price is buying a vendor, not a leader.
  • Ask for the monthly brief format. If there is none, there is no accountability loop.
  • Ask about data boundaries for AI work. If they have not thought about it, you will be the one explaining it to your clients later.

Whoever you hire, make them put the number on the page. It tells you how they will behave on the invoice.
